Kael Matthys is thrilled to not be shorter than some of her students this year.

“I’m excited to be taller than the students again,” Matthys joked Tuesday inside her Hillsboro elementary classroom.

Matthys, 22, student taught fifth grade at Hillsboro Elementary School and had opportunities to fill in as a substitute teacher in her hometown a year ago.

The Hillsboro native graduated from Mayville State in December with a degree in elementary education.

Now she is eager to start her first year as a full-time teacher in the same school system where she grew up.

“I knew a lot of the kids from baby-sitting and swimming lessons,” Matthys said. “So I’m glad to get to stay with those families and keep watching the kiddos grow up."
