Andrew Nathan will be spending the dog days of summer pedaling for pooches.

In two weeks, the Hillsboro man will begin a three-day journey biking across North Dakota to raise money for Patriot Assistance Dogs (PAD), a regional organization that pairs veterans with service dogs.

Based out of Detroit Lakes, Minn., the group has trained and partnered more than 200 therapeutic pups with veterans – many of whom are readjusting to civilian life.

Nathan, a 22-year serviceman and instructor with the U.S. Army and Army Reserves, said the organization has a special place in his heart.

“I’m a combat veteran,” he said. “All of us veterans, we’re at different levels of capacity with how we cope and deal with re-establishing ourselves in society.
