Traill County tax officials on Tuesday revealed that a number of Buxton’s major businesses will see sharp increases in the valuations of their properties next year.

During a tax equalization hearing, county tax director Kayla Knudson indicated this year’s tax valuations for commercial properties in Stavanger Township are set to increase $5.8 million for taxes collected in 2020.

“It isn’t nice to see this huge increase in one year but unfortunately it is our fault for not getting it done previously,” Knudson said.

Hardest hit by the impending tax spike will be Buxton-based NoKota Packers and its potato washing plant near Interstate 29.

The potato packer and shipper received notice that its 2019 commercial valuation will increase from $960,000 to $4.5 million.

The spike in valuation will cause NoKota Packers’ annual taxes to surge from $10,000 to more than $49,000 in a year, said Steve Tweten, the company’s president.
