Paul Geray of Hillsboro won first place in the draft horse pull July 21 at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot.

Making the 245-mile trip from Hillsboro to Minot appeared to pay off for the veteran puller, but it was a 1,200-mile journey a month ago that set the stage for his state fair win.

After sitting out several regional horse pulls after one of his horses had become lame, Geray and his wife, Sheila, drove to Punxsutawney, Pa., last month to buy a new pulling mate for their 9-year-old Belgian horse, Rex.

In Pennsylvania, the Gerays and partner Bob Tabatt ponied up the cash to buy Tom, another 9-year-old Belgian, who hadn’t been in a horse pull since 2016.

Rex and Tom proved to be a winning combination.
