Administrators in the Hillsboro and Central Valley school districts on Thursday lauded a decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend a school meal program that’s given free meals to students during the coronavirus pandemic.

The program will pick up the tab for school lunches this fall for kids in Traill County and across the nation regardless of whether they qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

“It’s great. This means all our families can eat for free until Dec. 31 or until the money in the program runs out,” Hillsboro Public Schools Superintendent Paula Suda said Thursday.

Federal officials had planned to let parts of the meal program expire at the end of September after launching the program in March due to the coronavirus.
