A representative from the Grand Forks Air Force Base will be the featured speaker at the annual Veterans Day community program at 11 a.m. Monday inside the Hillsboro Events Center.

Base officials hadn’t announced the name of the speaker when the Banner went to press Thursday.

Rich Gehrke, commander of the Hillsboro VFW, will lead Monday’s public program honoring those who have served in the U.S. military.

“The program is always well-received,” Gehrke said Wednesday.

“Our veterans in Hillsboro and the surrounding area are treated very well. Veterans Day is one of those days to try and remember the various wars or conflicts that veterans have served in and what they have done to get and preserve freedom for our country.”

Gehrke will recognize soldiers Monday for their service during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, as well as U.S. military operations in Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Vocalist Ang Kritzberger and Hillsboro music teacher Julie Zerface will lead the audience in service songs for the Marines, Navy, Air Force and Army.

Kritzberger is scheduled to perform a musical selection later in the program and Zerface will show the video “American Tears” for the audience. The pair will sing “God Bless America” to conclude Monday’s program.

The program will be preceded by a similar event honoring veterans starting at 10 a.m. today (Friday) for students at Hillsboro Elementary School.
