Paul Rue thought his Saturday morning would be relatively routine.

But minutes after his wife, Kathleen, left for work around 6:30 a.m., the Hillsboro-area farmer received a phone call.

Paul left the house to find Kathleen and her 2016 Nissan Rogue had fallen into a section of washed-out township road 150 feet from the couple’s rural home.

“She said it just happened so quickly,” he said Monday morning. “It was still pretty dark outside so she couldn’t see it had washed out until she was in it.”

Torrential rainfall last Friday evening triggered flash flooding that inundated basements and roadways across Hillsboro and Traill County last weekend.
