The Central Valley School Board on Wednesday abandoned its plans to build an addition to the crow’s nest at the rural Buxton school’s football field this summer.

Board members agreed July 2 to spend $25,000 to renovate and expand the press box at Randy Vigen Field citing safety concerns over the aging structure and a need for more space.

But Superintendent Jeremy Brandt said a structural engineer who studied the project concluded that two more concrete piers and steel beams were needed to stabilize the building.

Those additional materials and accompanying labor pushed the cost of the project from $25,000 to $32,000, plus an additional hourly wage for the structural engineer.
