Crews from the Buxton Fire Department and Hillsboro Fire and Rescue responded to a large grass fire 3 miles north of Hillsboro Friday, Nov. 6.

The blaze began at approximately 1:30 p.m. and torched nearly 8 acres of dry grassland west of Rahr Malting’s Taft Elevator, between mile markers 108 and 109 along Interstate 29.

Gusty north winds helped fuel the fire, which was mostly contained by 2:30 p.m.

Hillsboro Fire Chief Jamie Reed said the likely cause of the fire was smoking material along the road, but nothing had been confirmed.

“It was kind of challenging,“ he said. “We’re really dry right now, so until we get some moisture, the fire risk is high.”

No injuries and no damage were reported Friday.

Reed reminded the public to make sure burning materials are fully extinguished before being left unattended.
