The unthinkable happens this weekend: My kiddo enters double digits.

Yes, my son, Jack, turns 10 on Sunday, and for some reason this feels more momentous to me than my own milestone birthdays.

I was just a few months older than Jack when my family first moved to Hillsboro. I have plenty of memories of my life before that, when my family lived in Wimbledon, N.D., but they’re more of the little-kid variety – bits and pieces that stuck in my mind rather than the whole picture.

But I remember everything after age 10.

It’s a lot of pressure for a parent; the things I now recall so clearly from my pre-teen years are the things Jack will remember one day when he’s my age – and likely discussing them in therapy.

So we’d best make the time count.

Many of my favorite memories are tied to foods (and vice versa), so even when a recipe takes a little more time and effort, I’m happy to put in some extra work to make my kiddo’s favorites on special occasions.

And I’ll never forget what the kiddo said when I first made these when he was 5 (half his age now!): “It’s opposite day! These are the worst breadsticks I’ve ever eaten.” And he ate half the batch.
