The hubby has been gone the past few weekends, and although it sounds totally backward, I’m actually more productive around the house when it’s just the kiddo and me. I think it’s because the hubby tends to take care of more things around the house - like laundry and dishes - than I do (I’m usually buried in paperwork) and he makes it very easy for me to rely on him.

But when it’s just the kiddo and me, if I’m not doing the hubby’s usual tasks, I know they won’t get done.

So for the past few weeks, I was rearranging my schedule to get more paperwork done during the week so that my weekends were freed up for housework.

The kiddo and I were like whirling dervishes, clearing out his old clothes and toys, setting up the kiddo’s new office/gaming room and finally returning my dining room (where the kiddo’s computer was set up for two years) to its previously peaceful state.

But I found that I also had time to play in the kitchen. A lot. Don’t tell the hubby, but I actually miss him a lot when he’s gone, and keeping busy makes the house feel a little less lonely.

In between the cleaning binges and loads of laundry, I managed to whip up 10 new recipes in the past two weekends; some recipes were ideas gleaned from other dishes I’d seen online or in magazines, and others were the product of an overactive imagination.

In any case, it was fun to just set aside all the usual weekend work and play with my food. I decided I’m going to try to do this at least once a month from now on.

Especially if the hubby’s home to clean up after me.
