I’m not an easygoing person by nature, but these past few weeks have taught us all a thing or two about flexibility, adaptability and rolling with the flow.

Obviously the circumstances surrounding the sudden weirdness in the world are terrifying and worrisome and we’d never wish them on anyone. But my parents always taught me to try and see the positives in any situation, and to try and make good from the bad.

And there is a lot of intentional goodness happening in the world right now.

We’re a very fast-paced society; we have long work weeks, commutes and evenings packed with activities. We don’t slow down unless we’re forced to – whether because of illness, extreme weather or the current pandemic the likes of which the modern world hasn’t seen in quite some time.

Suddenly, we’ve been forced to focus on our households and our family units. Because of social and physical distancing, these little pods of people are spending more time with each other, and it’s quality time.

On social media, parents are posting pictures of towheaded kids lined up at the table working on schoolwork together, and kids learning life skills at home with their parents. I’ve seen friends post about having more time together when they’re not commuting two hours a day, and grandparents say they see more of their grandkids – even if it’s virtually – because people are taking the time to check on each other.

I’m working from home most of the time, and the kiddo and I like to cook simple lunches using ingredients we can scrounge from around the house – like this soup, where you can swap ingredients in and out depending on what you have or like. Sometimes the hubby joins us, too.

Personally, I feel lucky. If I were to be stranded on a deserted island with anyone in the world, these are the people I’d choose. And these are the people I get to be tucked away with right now.
