Butter & herb-basted turkey breast

I recently had my annual checkup with my doctor, and now that I’m 40, these checkup things seem to be a lot more complicated. And thorough. And depressing.

I’m still used to the doctor appointments of my 20s which typically were defined as wellness checks – in other words, you’re not there because something’s wrong; you just want to double-check that all is indeed well.

But going to the doctor in your 40s is like getting your oil changed at Jiffy Lube; you sit there flipping through a dog-eared People magazine while waiting for the guy with the clipboard to come out and tell you all the terrible things that are wrong with your car because you haven’t maintained it properly over the course of the past few years.

(This is one of the many reasons I haven’t been to a Jiffy Lube since I moved back to Hillsboro. Paul and Bob at Paul’s Hometown Repair never sit me down with a bad-news clipboard. And they’re far less likely to blame me for lack of maintenance when they can instead berate the car’s manufacturer for shoddy workmanship. I love my doctors, but they rarely pin the blame on my manufacturer.)

This year’s checkup wasn’t all smooth sailing; there were more appointments and tests, but everything turned out pretty OK in the end.

Except my cholesterol.

Now, my doctor didn’t actually call me on the carpet about this, but I can Google test results with the best of them. I know the number isn’t stellar and I’ve got to work on getting it down.

Even if it’s right before the holidays and, to be honest, I’m thoroughly confused about cholesterol. (Eggs? Really high in cholesterol. An entire bag of Old Dutch Sour Cream ‘n’ Onion chips? Zero cholesterol. I don’t understand.)

But I figure anything that’s bad for me in other ways is probably not great for my cholesterol, which is why I didn’t partake of the deliciously crispy, butter-basted skin of this delectable golden turkey breast. Luckily, the meat itself was so tender and flavorful that I barely missed it.

I’ve got a lot to be thankful for this year, as I do every year. But the older I get, the more thankful I am to be surrounded by my amazing family and friends, and that we’re all in relatively good health.

And yes, I’m also thankful for those cholesterol-free chips.
